UNDEX TESTING & COMPLETION CERTIFICATION
Ocean Design, Inc. (ODI), a provider of systems and technology equipment for the
U.S. Navy, has announced the successful Underwater Explosive Shock testing
(Undex) of their new cabling design. ODI’s Countermeasures System Cabling
was specifically designed for the Virginia Class (and 688) submarines. Two
separate, ruggedized designs were presented for certification, with both
passing all tests without any issues; a great achievement for this challenging
assessment of the required full connectivity and survivability. ODI utilized
extensive design experience and manufacturing capability to introduce the
latest in high-quality interconnect equipment required for this critical
outboard system.
In addition to Undex testing, ODI successfully demonstrated debond
testing for these cable assemblies, demonstrating the capability of its
Navy-certified polyurethane molding facility. Debond test results were
well in excess of the Navy's Outboard Cable Molding manual requirements
(NAVSEA S9320-AM-PRO-020, Molding and Inspection Procedures for Fabricating
Connector Plugs for Submarine Outboard Cables).
NAVY POLYURETHANE MOLDING CERTIFICATION
ODI’s polyurethane molding facility achieved Navy certification in July
2001. This certification was granted after a site inspection by Defense Supply
Center Columbus, (Ohio) acting in agreement with Naval Surface Warfare Center,
Crane, (Indiana).
This designation certifies that ODI manufactures critical outboard submarine
cables within full compliance of the challenging protocol mandated by the Navy.
ODI supplies underwater mateable connectors and cable assemblies to the U.S.
Navy, and is a key supplier of critical enabling technology for future classes
of Navy ships and submarines.
