ODI PROJECT MANAGEMENT
CANYON EXPRESS – Offshore Oil and Gas Project

Canyon Express is located in the Gulf of Mexico 120 miles SE of New Orleans in
the Mississippi Canyon. It is one of the most advanced subsea tiebacks to-date
with combined production from three independently operated deepwater subsea
fields, Aconcagua operated by Total Fina Elf; Camden Hills operated by
Marathon; and Kings Peak operated by BP.
One of the key technologies of this project was the use of an Intelligent Well
Completion System on Kings Peak featuring ODI-supplied Fiber Optic Hybrid
Connection systems installed at a depth of 7,200 ft. This technology is key to
allowing for production optimization through the availability of real-time
data via a 55 mile long main umbilical. This makes Canyon Express the largest
single project to date which utilizes fiber-optic communications.
Among ODI’s Featured Capabilities on this project are:
-
Introduction of ODI 19-way wet-mate Nautilus remotely operated vehicle (ROV) and
Stabplate Connectors (more than 25 pairs)
-
Hybrid Electro/ Optical Connectors (212 total) including 22 Hybrid Field
Installable Termination Assemblies and 83 Hybrid Flying ROV Harness Assemblies
-
35 Electrical Field Installable Termination Assemblies and 177 Electrical Flying
Jumper Assemblies (EFL’s)
-
Harness Assemblies comprised more than 3,000 ft. of pressure-balance oil-filled
hose
-
4-month mobilization of 12 ODI Field Service Technicians and Engineering support
in Moss, Norway for installation of umbilical termination assemblies with final
installation work carried out in Port Fouchon, Louisana.
ODI’s systems began installation in 2001 and carried through to 2002. More
can be read on ODI’s involvement with this project in the article
contained on this website, Ocean Design in
TotalFinaElf Canyon Express Supplement (.pdf).
